About the Workshop

Mokuhanga

Mokuhanga is a Japanese word that translates to woodblock printmaking. It is a non-toxic process and does not require a press to print. Visually, it has potential for creating both precise and exact marks as well as expressive and painterly impressions.
Participants will learn to create their own multi-colour prints using traditional Japanese carving and printing techniques. This includes learning how to carve using a Hangi-to (carving knife), how to print using the traditional Kento registration method, and how to use various types of Bokashi (ink blending technique) in the prints. Other unconventional technical possibilities will be presented and explored together!
The workshop will begin with a thorough demonstration of the entire process from carving to printing. Throughout the workshop, individual aspects of the process and materials may be discussed, such as tools, papers, paper sizing, tool sharpening methods, pigments, and more. There will be conversations and discussions throughout the workshop.
This is the first workshop of the year for HKOP, and we have been looking forward to it. We warmly welcome you to sign up and participate. Let’s explore the possibilities of Japanese-style water-based woodblock printing together in this workshop.
