It was autumn 1952. Rauschenberg stayed in Italy and North Africa for a few months until spring 1953. He lived in a cramped apartment in Rome and worked in a construction company in Morocco for a short while. Faced with limited space and tight budget, Rauschenberg made his art by using what he had found and seen. Through photography and collage, he captured the light, shadow and colours of the places he had visited.

Fifty-four years later, in 1990, Rauschenberg and the Styria Studio in New York published a limited edition of lithographs of 28 collage works, recreating the series Shirtboards, the collages Rauschenberg made when he travelled in Europe and North Africa.

In Nov 2022, with kind consent, Ms Cho Yeou-jui lent her collection to the Hong Kong Open Printshop, allowing us to share this renowned series with the public and curate the first-ever exhibition of Rauschenberg in Hong Kong. It was a valuable chance for us to catch a glimpse of the artist’s early works.

You can now take the 28 artworks in this exhibition "Robert Rauschenberg: Travelogue" home with you in this delicately made catalogue.
