Since the beginning of time, humans have dreamt of flying, creating flying machines of all shapes and sizes at different times throughout history. The actual realisation of the dream of flying came after centuries of trying. It began with the successful takeoff of the Wright brothers’ Wright Flyer in America, leading to our ability to cruise in the stratosphere and propel ourselves into the infinite universe.
Flight of Fancy presents a range of prints on paper by Stephen Hoskins as well as two of his printstallation works. The works in the exhibition combine a variety of aesthetics with the results of his research on print technologies. For his flying machines to soar, the artist has to combine materials that are both delicate and resilient with appropriate print techniques and a streamlined form.
▎About Stephen Hoskins
Stephen Hoskins has been making hand-printed kites, winged artwork and aeroplane prints for the last forty years. The prints are as much about the craft of making, as they are a gentle delight in challenging both the notions of what constitutes a print and where the perceived borders between the fine and applied arts end and begin.
Hoskins trained as a Fine Art Printmaker. During the creation period of the work in this exhibition, he ran a large university research department that allowed him to gain knowledge and access to new technologies and processes that are becoming or have become, part of the canon of printmaking. But his true love is the process of making: “The act of making work is often as satisfying as showing work. I enjoy trying to make
an economical structure that has an elegance and hopefully a beauty.”
He founded and chaired IMPACT (International Multi-disciplinary Printmaking, Artists, Concepts and Techniques), now serves as the advisor of the Conference and was appointed as a professor at the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) in 2003.
