Colour Mining is the second chapter of Told by the Soil – Stories of Victoria. This time, Carol Lee sieved and ground the primary soil to examine the colours it contains. The primary soil excavated from No. 24-28 Bonham Road was visually inspected and separated into particles of different colours. The samples were then sieved and finely ground into pigments, resulting in a range of 100 colours.

There is no recipe to follow for making inks from these primary soil pigments. Carol had to start from scratch and search for the best ratio between pigment and binder. In the end, she used Shades of Time as my colour reference and made relief prints for 365 days with the inks prepared from selected pigments of the 100 colours of “B.Rd 24-28/1/100”

Carol has devoted herself to researching and exploring primary soil. The toils and joys she experienced throughout the entire creative process will be revealed in this sharing. Additionally, Carol will explore the possibilities of printmaking together with the moderator and the audience.
