紙本以外｜【示範系列】④ 樹膠染印｜Beyond Paper | “Demonstration Series” ④ Gum Bichromate Print

樹膠染印 (Gum Bichromate Print) 源於19世紀。當時，畫意攝影 (Pictorialism) 風潮盛行，不少攝影師偏愛樹膠染印細膩柔和的色調。

掌握樹膠染印的技巧，需要拿捏多個變數，其中包括感光溶液的比例，以及曝光和顯影的過程。在樹膠染印的準備過程中，常用到阿拉伯膠 (Gum Arabic)、重鉻酸鉀 (Potassium Dichromate) 和水彩(Water colour)。把感光溶液混合好後，便把溶液塗在版畫紙上，然後把底片覆蓋在紙張上，逐層曝光和顯影。此方式可創作出單色、多色甚至全彩色的影像。

版畫家陳卓甄運用此古典的顯影手法，創作出具有細膩色調的版畫圖像。是次示範，陳卓甄將展示樹膠染印的製作過程，呈現它獨特多變的感覺。

關於陳卓甄

陳卓甄為香港浸會大學視覺藝術院本科畢業生。她的創作源於她對世界與自身的日常觀察。提取生活中平凡瑣事的片段，透過版畫、攝影、錄像、身體和文字創作，回應社會現象及探索自我意識，保持自省的狀態。陳卓甄於2018年獲「香港版畫工作室年獎」，她的作品曾於香港、台灣、韓國及悉尼展出。

Gum bichromate is a multi-layered printing process that originated in the 19th century. During the time of the Pictorialism movement, many photographers favoured the delicate and subtle colour variation of Gum Bichromate Prints.

 

The technique involved in making gum prints includes mastering several variables, such as the proportion of the pigmented light sensitive mixture, and the process of exposure and development. To prepare the mixture, gum arabic, potassium dichromate solution, and watercolours are commonly used. Once the mixture is prepared, it is applied to the printmaking paper, and the negative is placed over the paper. The image is then created through a series of exposure and development steps, resulting in monochrome, multi-colour, or even full-colour images.

Printmaker Glo Chan employs this classical developing technique to produce print images with delicate colours. In this demonstration, Glo will showcase the process of creating gum bichromate prints, highlighting the exquisite beauty of this technique.

About Glo Chan Cheuk-yan

Glo Chan Cheuk-yan is a graduate of the Academy of Visual Arts at Hong Kong Baptist University. Her practice is inspired by her daily observations of the world and herself. She captures mundane moments in life through printmaking, photography, moving images, the body, and poetry. In her artworks, she expresses her thoughts and experiences in response to the world and self-consciousness. She received the "HKOP Award in Printmaking" in 2018. Her work has been exhibited in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea, and Sydney.
