Since 1968, Tetsuya Noda has captured many moments in his life with a camera. These moments—his diary—has been the motif of his work for more than fifty years. These fragmentary seconds of light and shadow are transformed by the artist's meticulously modulated plate -making process and precise preparations. As the ink penetrates and lies on the fibers of the Japanese washi paper, a fragment of a second settles and becomes eternal in Diary.

In the exhibition Tetsuya Noda: A Variation of Mimeograph, Hong Kong Open Printshop selected seven images of Rika, the printmaker's daughter, from the Diary Series. Through the artist's eyes, we witness the young girl growing up, getting married and becoming a mother. Looking at his works, that span 42 years, is like being embraced by a cloth of enduring love in all its glory and constancy.

Displayed alongside these prints is also a rare collection of mimeograph machines and artefacts illustrating the development of print technology over the past hundred years. Invented in the 1890s, the mimeograph was a technological breakthrough in printing at the time and the precursorgraph of the contemporary that has become popular in the independent publishing and zine printing industry in recent years.

About Tetsuya Noda
Tetsuya Noda was born in 1940 in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan. He studied art at the Tokyo National University of Fine Art and Music and continued to graduate degree. In 1977 he was appointed a lecturer in the faculty of art. During the 1980's he was a visiting artist at several universities in Canada, Israel, the USA and Australia.

Noda's work has a dominant contemporary contribution to the rich Japanese printmaking tradition. He incorporates modern screen printing techniques with the Japanese woodblock heritage. He deals with every day while documenting the passage of his life in his artworks, taking notes of the gentle Japanese peaches, the poetry of a group of lemons, or the way a traditional paper wrinkles.
